CONSUMING THE CITY
Lola Lorite

What An alternative strategy for branding the city of Málaga that doubles as a platform for connecting activists, residents and tourists.

Why Málaga, like many cities, has branded itself to attract international tourists, corporations and investors. But at a price. Vacant buildings and an exodus of local residents are the reality behind the guidebook image that emphasiszes the birthplace of Pablo Picasso.

How A city map showing buildings with preserved facades but nothing behind them serves as a metaphor for cultural impoverishment. Collectives present alternative strategies in a video, and an online platform translates their knowledge so that citizens can connect with it, empowering them to share their own information.

Quote “My role is to mediate between collectives, inhabitants and visitors to Málaga.”
